I just listened to Alexandria Ocasio Cortez’ Instagram message about how traumatic the January 6 assault on the US Capitol was for her personally.
She was so real in that statement – shared her fear and trauma with us so genuinely – that the father in me was stirred to righteous anger and protection of someone who belongs to me.
Those congressional members who ran in fear for their lives – from people who had very specifically targeted to kill some of them, especially AOC who they hate so much – work for us. They are in Washington to do “the peoples work”. We are responsible for their well-being.
If you were running a little business and someone came into your office threatening your secretary, I would hope you would get between them.
Now the Republicans want to sweep the whole thing under the rug. Not because of the Constitution. Not out of any sense of what’s right – they abandoned that cause a long time ago.
They want to make the whole thing go away because facing what happened there makes them look bad. If they’re still afraid to cross Trump, and we lay out very specifically for the whole country to see just how terrible his actions were – how close “his people” came to killing our people – then that makes these cowardly Republicans look very bad indeed. It will hurt their reelection prospects – and that’s all they really care about.
If I sit by and watch the Republicans do that, then I share responsibility for abandoning that young woman congressman and our other employees who were endangered.
That goes for you, too.
